January 2022 – Happy New Year!

I hope you had a joyous and fulfilling end to 2021. I also hope that you have an exciting 2022, and you reach those goals you set for yourself.

I have a mentor who says, “People overestimate what they can do in a year, and underestimate what they can do in a decade.”

What are your goals for 2022? Have you written them down? Do you know where you’d like to be in a year? Do you know where you’d like to be in ten years?

Sometimes we avoid asking ourselves these questions because they feel intimidating. The key to success with our goals is to ask ourselves questions that inspire us, and then to break the goals down into achievable steps. Otherwise, we’ll feel overwhelmed and want to give up.

Let’s say you have some debt you want to pay off. Maybe you have $10,000 in credit card debt and you’d like to pay it off completely. Can you save $900 a month to pay it off this year? Maybe you can only save $200. Whatever the case, figure out realistically what you can do. Then make your goal to automate it. Each month, have that money taken out of your pay right away and pay down the debt.

Maybe you want to save for a down payment on a new home. Where do you want to live, and what kind of home do you want to own? How much does that down payment need to be and how much can you realistically save each month? Start automatic transfers to a high yield savings account so it’s out of sight as a spending option!

When I was in the Service, I encouraged my Marines to save every annual pay raise they got. Some of them took my advice and ended up paying off all their debt and saving a lot of money!
